Nymphomania-Be-Gone

Nymphomania-Be-Gone

Nymphomania, being one of the most ill-defined terms in psychology, has had and interesting history colored by culture, morality, and religion. The term, as well as the male counterpart of it, have both been removed and replaced by a new term. The new term, hyper sexuality, is encountering the same debates on objectivity that the original “disorders” encountered, however.

Keywords:
mental health, psychosis, stress and anxiety, therapy, treatment

Nymphomania (and the male counterpart, satyriasis) are no longer official psychological disorders. Arguably, the two above conditions were never really mental health issues in the first place. Rather, the two seemed more like reactions and developments based on culture, morality, and perception. Indeed, even when the two were “official” problems, it was difficult to define what sort of sexual behavior could be considered to fall under them. Most of the definitions of nymphomania stem from a time when study of a woman’s mental health was intrinsically linked to the condition of her genitalia and sexual health. Scientifically speaking, there probably is a correlation, but not in the way it was originally envisioned.

The History Behind It

The psychosis (and the term is used loosely) classification known as nymphomania is categorized by excessive sexual behavior. This was defined during a time when human sexuality was poorly understood and a number of beliefs on “appropriate female behavior” were prevalent. Essentially, during the time that the term was coined and classified as a form of psychosis, women were not supposed to have sexual urges. Women who had mental and emotional stability did not behave in a sexual manner, the definition at the time being a very stringent one. Activities such as flirting were often enough to arouse suspicion, but there are recorded examples of more extreme behavior, such as public masturbation and sexually attacking random men. While women in these reports certainly had some form of mental health disorder, most experts now agree that it was not “nymphomania.”

Subjective Definitions and Diagnosis

Nymphomania has always been the target of subjective definitions. Judging whether or not a woman’s advances and behavior are inappropriate is difficult, mainly because there are countless factors involved. For example, the relative moral climate of the time and place where the assessment is made can play a role. What would have been considered nymphomaniac-like behavior during the late 18th or 19th century could be considered rather typical sexual behavior for today’s generation. Also, individual perceptions can make it impossible to find a consensus on what does and does not fall under the term. What may be seen as lewd and offensive to one observer could be little more than an expression of sexual health and interest for another. This gave nymphomania the distinction of being the only mental health disorder wherein the diagnosis relies entirely on the judgment of the psychologist, and not based on some objective standard.

Removal From the Books

The terms “nymphomania” and “satyriasis” have both been removed from the list of disorders, replaced by the term “hypersexuality.” The term is not quite a direct replacement of the above. In spirit, it covers much the same problem, but the letter of the definitions and descriptions differ. The new term only takes effect when the behavior becomes clinically dangerous, rather than relying on socio-cultural judgments. In other words, there has to be some sort of notable psychiatric effect other than the behavior itself. However, there is still debate on what would have to be considered before someone is diagnosed with having hypersexuality. The term has been accepted, but there is still heated debate on what behavioral signs are to be taken as symptoms of the problem. For the time being, the only consensus is when the behavior becomes disruptive to other activities and psychological processes.

The Dangers of Botox Skin Care

The Dangers of Botox Skin Care

Botox, a skin care and maintenance compound derived from a toxic substance, is among the most popular ways for people to “refresh” their skin. However, there are rare cases when the toxin spreads outside the intended area and causes damage to the body in the form of side effects. The less toxic form used by plastic surgeons may be good for making a person’s skin look younger, but the human immune response to it can cause dangerous problems.

Keywords:

Botox is among the foremost skin care and skin alteration procedures available today, with an unparalleled ability to “remove” wrinkles and make the skin look younger and wrinkle-free. The treatment is effective but temporary, such that plastic surgeon’s offices regularly get repeat customers for new injections of the compound. However, as popular as it is, botox is not always the safest choice for the type of skin care and beauty maintenance that it does. The name alone, botox, is an implication of the true nature of the substance: botulinum toxin type A. While the form injected into people’s faces and used as a skin care tool is not the raw and potentially toxic form of the chemical, it can cause a number of unpleasant side effects.

Upper respiratory infection is often reported as a side effect of botox use, likely a remnant of the effects the pure toxin had on the body. This sign is often accompanied by hypertonia, back pain, dizziness, violent coughing fits, and rhinitis. A general weakness has also been associated with this particular side effect of botox, usually because the toxin is interacting with parts of the body outside the intended area. While not toxic enough to be as lethal as it usually is, there are still enough poisonous elements in the typical plastic surgeon’s botox formula to be very dangerous if it spreads beyond the intended area. According to statistics, roughly 12% of all botox cases suffer from this problem after being injected.

Another side effect is primary a xillary hyperhidrosis, which entails excessive sweating, pain, and the possibility of hemorrhage. There is also the increased risk of infection in the injected area, along with other, minor discomforts. These minor signs include flu symptoms, headaches, dizziness, pharyngitis, and neck pain. The estimates of how many people develop these problems range from 3% to 10%, though these numbers are subject to speculation because the conditions of the clinical trials vary. Most experts do not take these trials to be indicative of the situation when put into actual medical practice.
Blepharophasm, a condition where the eyelids close involuntarily, is also often associated with botox as a side effect. The involuntary closing of the eyelids is often caused by muscle spasms and may involve just one eye, though it is more common for both eyes to have the problem. Eye dryness, which often accompanies blepharophasm, has also been associated with botox injection cases. The effects can last for several days after the injection itself, but it has only been known to appear in roughly 4% of all botox procedures.

Also, depending on just how diluted the toxic components of botox are in the formula, the patient might exhibit signs of being injected with botulinum toxin. According to some studies, a number of side effects that come with botox injections are caused by the body developing an immune system response to the injection. Essentially, the body fights off the biological effects of the injections (something it is unable to do if the toxin is at full strength) and prevents it from doing what it is supposed to do. While there is no data on just how this causes side effects, it has been linked as the primary cause of the problem. There were some indications that the closer the formula is to its toxic origins, the lower the chances of a successful immune response. Of course, that brings with it a new set of potential hazards.

What Are Epidural Steroid Injections?

What Are Epidural Steroid Injections?

The epidural steroid injections are long lasting steroid (CORTISONE) injections that are injected into the Epidural space, the area which surrounds the spinal cord and the nerves coming out of it, to relieve the severe back pains, inflammation and/or swelling of nerves in the Epidural space, and to reduce pain, tingling & numbness and other symptoms caused by nerve inflammation / irritation or swelling. The epidural steroid injections are sometimes also called spinal injections.

The epidural steroid injections are sometimes also called spinal injections.

The epidural steroid injections were first used in 1952 to cure low back pain associated with sciatica (pain in the sciatic nerve due to lumbar disc herniation). The epidural steroid injections are popular non-surgical treatment for low back pain. The epidural steroid injections are mixture of local anesthetics, such as lidocaine or bupivacaine and the steroid medications triamcinolone – Aristocort® or methylprednisolone – Depo-medrol®, Celestone-Soluspan.
The epidural steroid injections are effective non-surgical treatment for the patients suffering from severe acute or chronic low back pain and/or leg pain caused by the conditions, such as lumbar disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, and lumbar spinal stenosis.

The epidural steroid injections are administered making patient lie flat on x-ray table on their abdomen. Before giving epidural steroid injections, skin is numbed with lidocaine that is similar to the novocaine (anesthetic) that the dentists use. The patients may feel their legs slightly heavy and may be numb after epidural steroid injections, and they are monitored for 15 to 20 minutes with EKGs, blood pressure cuffs and blood oxygen monitoring devices.

The immediate effects of epidural steroid injections disappear in a few hours. The epidural steroid injections (cortisone) start working in about 3 to 5 days, and their effect lasts for several days to a few months. If the first injections do not relieve of pain in about a week to two weeks, the patients may be recommended to go for epidural steroid injections again. If the second injections also do fail to work, the patients may be recommended to go for the third round of epidural steroid injections, but patients can’t be given more than 3 epidural steroid injections in a period of six months.

However, epidural steroid injections are linked with some risks, side effects, and possibility of complications, which include risk of spinal puncture with headaches, infection, bleeding inside the Epidural space with nerve damage, worsening of symptoms etc. The side effects of CORTISONE may include weight gain, increase in blood sugar (mainly in diabetics), water retention, suppression of body’s own natural production of cortisone etc.

The Possible Doomsday Consequences of Antibiotic Resistance

The Possible Doomsday Consequences of Antibiotic Resistance

For a few years now, medical experts and scientists have been noting how more and more strains of infectious bacteria are developing antibiotic resistance, rendering old ways of dealing with them useless. One or two bacterial agents is not a major problem, but the medical community is worried that the continued use of antibiotics would only lead to more strains becoming resistant.

Keywords:
antibiotic resistance

For a period of time in recent history, antibiotics were heralded as being the most effective possible treatment for infectious diseases. Most of those illnesses were caused by bacterial agents, so the use of medications that killed off harmful bacteria was a sensible, practical solution. However, there is no clear indication that anyone within the medical or scientific communities saw the rapid evolution of antibiotic resistance coming. Even if someone did, history certainly doesn’t reflect it all that well. Regardless of the slip-up of the past, it is now understood that the typical antibiotic has a limited lifespan now, being rendered nearly useless as soon as the bacterial agent they target has developed resistance to their effects. This was the case with tuberculosis, which was once thought to have been wiped out in the developed world, and is the case with many other bacterial infections.

The problem of dealing with antibiotic resistance is a complex one. Some bacterial agents have developed their resistance only to certain agents – though those agents are the ones that are prescribed as treatment. Other microbes, on the other hand, have developed effective antibiotic resistance to all antimicrobial agents currently available on the market. This situation, some public health officials worry, is bound to cause major problems. A number of experts are pointing out the gradual increase in the number of resistant cases of tuberculosis to be an indication of the possible damage this problem can cause. With tuberculosis being resistant to all the current drugs used against it, treatment for patients with the resistant strain is becoming more and more difficult, and the disease is becoming more and more fatal.

One single illness that has antibiotic resistance does not a major public health problem make. Most authorities in the medical field would not be worried if there wasn’t evidence that other bacterial infections are starting to prove as resilient as the common cold. The common cold has long been a problem for medicine, such that being able to develop a cure for it has long been considered impossible. The bacteria at the root of the cold adapts with a rapid pace, becoming resistant to the effects of medication used to treat it the year before. While hardly something that is life-threatening, there is a very strong possibility that other, more dangerous bacterial agents might emerge with the same level of adaptability. Another possible scenario involves multiple bacterial agents developing resistance and reemerging into the public arena. Their infectious nature and antibiotic resistance, plus the relative degree of congestion in the average urban area, nearly guarantees a rapid spread of infection.

If this sounds like a bad plot for a doomsday scenario in a science fiction novel, that’s because said scenarios may not really be that far off the mark. Bacterial adaptation against countermeasures being used against them is at a much faster rate than how fast researchers can develop new antibiotic medication. For example, a hospital in Switzerland found that, within a period of three years, the strains of Escherichia coli that they encountered developed resistance to all five known types of antibacterial agents for it. They have also noted that this sudden increase in resistance was linked to the increased use of said antimicrobial agents, which has caused some to believe that the very success and widespread use of antibiotics is the root cause of the problem. The more bacteria are exposed to the medication, the higher the chances that a mutated strain will emerge that is resistant to the effects.

Living With Spring Hayfever

Living With Spring Hayfever

Over 35 million Americans suffer from hay fever each year, and according to experts, this season is shaping up to be one of the worst. Here are tips to help you get through the spring hay fever season.

Keywords:
hay fever,seasonal allergic rhinitis

The hay fever season which ironically has nothing to do with either hay or fever is upon us.

Over 35 million Americans suffer from hay fever each year, and according to experts, this season is shaping up to be one of the worst.

We hay fever sufferers are about to be subjected to itching and watery eyes, stuffy noses, skin reactions, and other allergic reactions as high pollen counts invade the country sides and city blocks of America.

Hay fever or as I affectionately call it, “seasonal allergic rhinitis” is triggered by tree allergens such as pollens or molds.

The allergen triggers the release of histamine into the body which causes inflammation in the nose leading to the common symptoms of watery eyes, congestion, and sneezing.

So how do we allergy sufferers get through the season?

One – Make it a habit to monitor the pollen counts in your area. The National Allergy Bureau (NAB) has over 70 pollen counting stations throughout the nation. To view the pollen and mold counts for your area, go to the NAB website at http://www.aaaai.org/nab/index.cfm?p=pollen

Weather conditions, which can vary greatly, have a great impact on the pollen counts. This means you need to periodically monitor these counts. If the NAB is unreachable or inconvenient to you, be aware that some community newspapers publish the pollen and mold counts as well.

Two – control your environment by avoiding the pollens and molds that are making your spring miserable. Do this by making some of the following changes:

- Utilize your air conditioner to filter the outdoor air. In addition, change your heating and air conditioning filters every month.

- Pollen counts vary at different times of the day. Avoid peak pollen release times and limit your outdoor activity to the times when the pollen counts are at their lowest.

- Keeping windows closed at night to prevent pollens or molds from drifting into the home.

- Wash bedding in hot, not warm, water. In addition, look for detergent formulas that contain additives to remove allergens such as pollens, mildew and mold.

Three – make an appointment with an allergist. A certified allergist can assist you in identifying the exact allergens that are affecting you and provide you with a custom treatment plan (including pills, nasal sprays, herbs, acupuncture) to alleviate your symptoms.

Finally – if you’re simply sick and tired of being forced to hide indoors for much of the spring season, you might want to try immunotherapy or allergy shots. Allergy shots, administered over a series of months, will help to increase your tolerance to the allergens that trigger your allergies. While not a cure, immunotherapy can help greatly in reducing your sensitivities to allergies.

The Concept of Refractive Errors and their Corresponding Vision Correction

The Concept of Refractive Errors and their Corresponding Vision Correction

The Concept of Refractive Errors and their Corresponding Vision Correction

Keywords:
refractive errors vision correction eye care health fitness opthamology

The eyeball is a spherical organ situated in a bony cavity called the orbit. The muscles are located not only on each side of the eye, but also on the top and the bottom of the eye.

Based on this primary description of the anatomy of the eye, it can be deduced that the eye is such a highly sensitive organ that proper attention and safeguard must be taken into consideration.

Since many problems and health habits begin in childhood, sound principles of safe care need to be stressed at this time.

Complaints such these need to be investigated: headaches, dizziness, tiredness after close eye work, “cannot see well,” letters jump or run together, or eyes that feel scratchy or itchy. The appearance of inflamed or watery eyes, red rimmed, encrusted or puffy lids, recurring sties, crossed eyes, and unequal pupils may be significant.

Unusual behavior also should be noted such as holding a book too close, frowning, blinking, etc. A combination of these signs may be a short duration and often expected with an upper respiratory infection. However, persistence of these complaints indicates the need for a vision correction.

Vision and Vision Correction

Just as the eyes often reflect a systemic problem, an eye weakness may affect the total well-being of a person. The concept of total health care must be recognized by the health experts. An individual may complain of a minor visual disturbance and pass it off as something that may clear by itself. Such procrastination may have serious consequences.

On the other hand, any visual disturbance must be dealt with properly and should be given full treatment on an instant. With the help of some technological advancement that focus on vision correction, people can now enjoy their benefits aside from the usual help that the contact lenses and eyeglasses bring.

Vision correction is applied to people whose normal vision had elapsed. Normally, humans have a “20/20 vision,” which means they can see anything to as far as 20 feet to that of what a regular vision is “seeing” at 20 feet.

However, the concept of vision is not primarily focused on the object, rather humans see the “light” that is being reflected from the objects.

Vision correction is applied if there is an abnormality in the usual method of transporting the light rays from the object to the cornea, the vitreous humor to the retina, the lens, and the aqueous humor.

Hence, any kind of refractive errors need vision correction. For instance, nearsightedness or myopia takes place when the light is primarily focused on the face of the retina. In certain state, vision correction is applied through the help of eyeglasses.

Rays from objects situated at shorter distances or less than 6 meters require a “stronger” lens to focus them on the retina. This is brought about by a contraction of the ciliary muscle that relaxes the lens capsule and causes the lens to become more convex. This function is called accommodation, where the objects at different distances from the eye may be seen distinctly.

To understand more, here are some of the common refractive errors that require vision correction:

1. Presbyopia

With increasing age, the elasticity of the lens decreases, and accommodation for near vision is not complete. For example, it is common to see older people reading a paper held at arm’s length; this condition is known as presbyopia. It primarily pertains to the lessening of power of accommodation owing to aging process.

“Reading eyeglasses” is the common form of vision correction prescribed for these patients to enable them to focus rays from near objects on the retina.

2. Astigmatism

This type of refractive error results from uneven curvature of the cornea — instead of curving equally in all directions. The cornea is shaped somewhat like the bowl of a spoon.

Two foci, thus, occur instead of one and, as a consequence, the patient is unable to focus horizontal and vertical rays on the retina at the same time. These defects may be corrected with lenses called “cylinder lenses.”

Considering these few examples of refractive errors, external and internal examination of the eye must be applied first before the eye doctor can prescribe the right form of vision correction.

Indeed, vision correction may range from simple to most complicated form of treatment. Whatever the condition is, it is always worthy to remember that in order to avoid any probable vision correction, it is important to know the various steps in caring for the eyes.

Common Causes of Back Pain

Common Causes of Back Pain

If you suffer from back pain and lower backaches, this article addresses some of the most common reasons why.

Keywords:
back pain, backache, backaches, lower backache

The most common medical complaints are that of back pain. On a positive note, back pain episodes usually diminish within a few weeks if caused from muscle strain. Unfortunately, a backache can be among the most difficult and frustrating problems for patients and their doctors.

Understanding the cause of your pain is the key to proper treatment. Because back pain is sometimes difficult to treat, a better understanding of the causes of will assist patients in their recovery.

The most common causes of back pain are:

Muscle strains are the most common cause of low back pain. Patients may or may not remember the initial event that triggered their muscle spasm, but the good news is that most episodes of back pain from muscle strains fade away completely within a few weeks.

A ruptured intervertebral disc, also called a herniated disc, is another common cause of back pain.

Discogenic back pain is thought to be a common cause of low back pain. Discogenic back pain is the result of damage to the intervertabral disc, but without disc herniation. Diagnosis of discogenic back pain may require the use of a discogram.

Spinal stenosis causes back pain in the aging population. As we age, the spinal canal can become constricted, due in part to arthritis and other conditions. If the spinal canal becomes too tight, back pain can be the result.

Arthritis most commonly affects joints such as the knees and fingers. However, arthritis can affect any joint in the body, including the small joints of the spine. Arthritis of the spine can cause back pain with movement.

Spondylolisthesis causes back pain because adjacent vertebra become unstable and begins to “slip.” The most common cause of spondylolisthesis is due to degenerative changes causing loss of the normal stabilizing structures of the spinal column. If the spine becomes unstable enough, back pain can become a problem.

As stated earlier, backaches are hard to diagnose. The causes listed above are just a few of the most common reasons why people suffer with back pain. If you suffer from acute backaches, you should meet with your physician.
